In a meeting held at the Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Monday, December 7, 2020, His Excellency the Minister of Water and Irrigation, Dr. Motasem Saidan, emphasized that the ministry's policy will focus on supporting the fish sector in Jordan. During the meeting with Engineer Mohammad Omar Shaheen, President of the Fish and Marine Life Breeders Association, he also highlighted the importance of achieving food security in Jordan. The minister indicated that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation will hold regular meetings with representatives of the fish wealth sector and other relevant parties to work on resolving any obstacles facing the sector's development.
The meeting discussed the prospects and challenges facing the fish farming sector in Jordan, and the importance of coordination to support the water strategy, the strategic plan of the Water Authority, and the strategic plan of the Jordan Valley Authority. They also addressed the optimal utilization of available water resources such as dams and productive wells, in addition to the challenges faced by farms and factories in agricultural Jordan Valley areas, particularly regarding the necessary licenses.
For his part, Engineer Mohammad Shaheen emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between representatives of farmers in the fish sector, the ministry, supporting entities, and all sectors for the benefit of the national economy.
He added that the association represents investors in the fish sector to develop national fish products, in implementation of the Prime Minister's directives on the need to strengthen partnership with the private sector. This is especially important as the COVID-19 pandemic has proven the need to support national industry and agriculture to meet local market needs after the disruption of supply chains to the local market at the beginning of the pandemic.Engineer Mohammad appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in protecting the fish sector and its keenness to communicate to resolve any issues facing the agricultural sector, whether internal or external.
