The first meeting of the Fish and Marine Life Breeders Association was held on Monday, July 13, 2020. During this meeting, the administrative board was elected, with Engineer Mohammed Omar Shaheen as president, Engineer Mohammed Noor Al-Amawi as his deputy, and Mr. Ziad Al-Daradkeh, Mr. Hussam Murqah, Mr. Khair Al-Din Shaheen, Mr. Abdul Halim Al-Qarala, and Mr. Samer Al-Husni as members.
The president of the association, Engineer Mohammed Omar Shaheen, stated that establishing the association to represent the fish sector is a crucial step in developing this promising industry. He noted that fish farming and aquaculture are among the most integrated and rapidly developing agricultural industries over the past 10 years. The engineer also mentioned that Jordanian consumption in 2019 exceeded 120 million dinars, while farm production did not exceed 4% in 2010.
The association's goals include working to develop and increase the production share of fish and raising Jordanian fish consumption, which is considered among the lowest globally. This will be achieved by providing farmers with modern technology, increasing farm productivity, increasing the number of farms, and developing specific legislation to emulate global experiences in fish farming.
The association also aims to unify the authorities and formalities related to licensing, in addition to working with the Jordanian government to formulate an implementable national executive strategy. This strategy will serve as a roadmap for both public and private sectors to develop this industry, in line with the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who supports the agriculture and agro-industrial sectors. It is worth mentioning that the fish revolution sector has witnessed development in recent years due to consumer awareness of the importance of consuming fish meat and the global interest in fish farming. This has led to more than 70% of fish production coming from fish farms as opposed to marine fishing.
