Memorandum of Understanding between the Greater Amman Municipality and the Fish Farmers Association in the presence of the Ministry of AgricultureThe Greater Amman Municipality and the Jordanian Fish and Marine Life Farmers Association signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday. It was signed by the Mayor of Amman, Dr. Yousef Al-Shawarbeh, and the President of the Association, Engineer Mohammed Shaheen, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Khaled Al-Hunaifat, and the Minister of Public Works, Engineer Yahya Al-Kasbi.
The Mayor of Amman said, "The memorandum is a real beginning for a launch that allows the association to display and market its marine products through the municipality's slaughterhouse."
Al-Shawarbeh emphasized that the agricultural sector and food security are priorities that always receive attention from the Amman Municipality as an institution working within its jurisdiction in partnership, coordination, and cooperation with state institutions and the private sector to overcome all difficulties and challenges facing this sector.
The Minister of Agriculture said, "The agreement has a significant impact on the fish farming sector, and there is an increase in the number of fish farms at a rate of 40 farms annually, which is a positive indicator for reaching self-sufficiency in fish."He indicated that the ministry is working alongside official bodies and the private sector to increase the self-stock of all fish varieties, and provide an appropriate environment that ensures a incubator for agricultural products. There are future plans to advance this pioneering sector and generalize it to reach positive figures in fish self-sufficiency in the long term, covering local needs, as the local product currently covers only 5% of the need. The President of the Association said that signing the memorandum is the result of stages to receive support from the municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture to develop the fish sector in Jordan, which has witnessed great interest from the state in recent years to enhance food security.
Shaheen confirmed that the development of the fish sector goes through stages before, during, and after the end of production, which is a fundamental axis for protecting the farmer and consumer without intermediaries to avoid the difficulties facing the farmer at that stage. It is a step to develop the fish market, and the goal is to deliver the product directly to the consumer. The efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture have contributed to the production stages and the municipality in marketing.
The agreement, which extends for 4 years, aims to achieve food security and take steps to encourage Jordanian fish farmers to develop and sustain the local fish product, facilitate available ways to attract the fish market within a healthy, monitored, and high-quality environment, and provide the commodity to citizens easily, conveniently, and reassuringly.
The agreement allows the association to use part of the slaughterhouse department building and use it to display and sell fresh local fish according to public health and safety conditions, with the association obligated to adhere to public health, safety, and cleanliness conditions at the site and its facilities.
